What Imperial Ruins Look Like
It turns out that you don't need to visit Italy or Greece to see the fading remnants of former imperial glory - you can go to the Balkans and see a much more modern set of such relics - rotting Soviet era monuments - while the monuments are in what used to be Yugoslavia, and they were put up by Tito, they definitely have that "Soviet architecture" look/feel to them. Looking at the photos makes me wonder - in 100 years, how many people who live in that area will have any idea what these monuments meant to the people who put them up?

I guess it more shows how difficult is to force feed people to love something they don't, no matter how much concrete you throw at it. So those monuments shared un-bellowed destiny of the ones who built them, even when out of the context some of them could be viewed as interesting.

No disagreement from me on that. I just find it fascinating that we have what amounts to "Roman ruins" from the modern world. Which makes me think - a lot of Italy consisted not of Rome proper, but "Italian allies" - I wonder what the people circa 500 Ad thought of the rotting Roman monuments, if they were from the allied areas?
